Day Two - Deer Lodge

We made it off base ahead of schedule this morning, only by five minutes - but it's better than being late. :)

After stopping at SpokoFuel for milk (we had Carnation Instant Breakfast and bananas for breakfast), we headed through Spokane and to the Cabela's right across the Idaho border. Jess had never seen the mountain that Cabela's builds inside their stores...

Our next stop was Coeur d'Alene, to walk on the world's longest floating boardwalk (3,300 feet) on the lake and then explore town for a little bit.

Doesn't this moose / mouse look like the characters from the books "If You Give A Moose A Muffin" and "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie"? They aren't, but it sure looks like it. I also found some delicious huckleberry licorice. Yum!

From there, Jess took over the driving - across the pass and into Montana, where we also lost an hour of time, putting us one hour ahead of the folks back home. And yes, I had a heck of a time figuring that out.

We found Frosty's  on the side of I-90 in St. Regis, Montana. A fellow road-tripper from New York took this picture for us. For those back home, Frosty's was very similar to O'Brady's at Dollars Corner. Jess tried their blackberry milkshake while I stuck with huckleberry.

Unfortunately, we missed the Montana Territorial Museum in Deer Lodge by nine measly minutes. So we settled on the Auto Museum instead, you would not believe how close 120 classic cars can be packed into a building. One of my favorites: a late 60's Chevelle.

We did find this lonely fella sitting in the gift shop though  (such a sweet-talker :) )

After setting up our tent, we followed my friend Kyla's (a Deer Lodge native) recommendation and had dinner at 4B's. The turkey sandwich wasn't as good as the Country Cafe's, but the chicken noodle soup was delicious. Not being a fan of tomatoes, I didn't try their tomato soup, which by all accounts is world famous.

It was still early after dinner, so we stopped in at Montana Bar for a drink. We spent some time chatting with a local, who warned us to expect 40 degree temperatures for the night. Apparently it isn't really cold until it hits forty below...makes me glad I will be spending the winter in sunny SoCal. It's a little early to bust out the drunken singing, so we headed back to camp before the karaoke could get into full swing. After locating a few items that had become lost (buried) in the car, we got our stuff ready for the morning and are currently bundled up in the tent.

Home sweet home for the night:
